It is possible there is no available local places to learn muay thai.

You may need to commute a long way to find a place to learn muay thai.

Or in a lot of cases you may even have to catch an international flight to locate a muay thai gym to train at.

If you can find a local listing with good reviews that is accessible to you then this would be the best case scenario.

If there are no local options when you google “muay thai near me” then you may need to look at other options for where to learn muay thai.

Learn muay thai online

If you are in a country or region with no access to muay thai then it is possible to learn muay thai through online means. Here at Fiji Muay Thai this has been the main way to learn muay thai as there are no gyms here to train at.

International flights are not cheap and finding time to travel and train overseas for a couple of weeks or longer can be difficult to arrange.

So learning muay thai through online means has been really helpful.

A lot of muay thai gyms from Thailand and around the world have made instructional available online especially with the COVID 19 pandemic and social distancing requirements.

Some gyms and academies have free resources and live training access and others have zoom classes that require payment.

But there are many useful places to get muay thai instruction online for free.

You can start HERE at the Fiji Muay Thai page for free resources to learn muay thai.

Youtube is another great place to learn for free and some excellent resources to learn muay thai on YouTube include:

Learn muay thai through videos and books

Muay thai DVDs and books have been around for some time and provide great learning resources if you cant train live at a muay thai gym.

The good thing about books and DVDs is that they dont require internet connection.

The not so good thing is they are not free and will require some payment to learn muay thai using these resources.

If the idea of a one off payment for a physical product you can hold to help you learn muay thai then here are some great places to search for books and DVDs on muay thai.

Nowhere to Learn Muay Thai? Try Other Martial Arts

If muay thai is not available in your area you could always try other martial arts.

Boxing and Judo are usually widely available across the world and can provide great training and sparring practice. This can help if you want to learn muay thai later.

Boxing and Judo are also usually not that expensive to learn and train.

Krav Maga, Karate and Taekwondo are also widely taught these days and can be great supplements to your own online solo training in muay thai.

Not so widely taught be still popular and growing each day are MMA and BJJ which can also be excellent options if muay thai is not available.

In MMA you also can get excellent striking instruction but you will also focus on grappling and groundwork.

Learn Muay Thai in Thailand

If the circumstances are right timing wise and financially then I would definitely suggest travelling to Thailand to train and learn muay thai.

There are many options when it comes to training and learning in Thailand.

As the motherland of muay thai schools and gyms are widely available across all of Thailand.

The top fighters fight regulalrly in the two major stadiums in Bangkok, Rajademnern and Lumpinee. So Bangkok is definitely a great place to train muay thai.

The level however may be high for those who just want to learn muay thai.

Some of the more touristy places like Koh Samui in the South and Chiang Mai in the North can be more beginner friendly and also offer excellent tourist attractions outside of training.

Have a read of my experience training and learning muay thai in Chiang Mai back in 2014 HERE.

The next best option outside training in Thailand is to train with experienced muay thai fighters and trainers from Thailand.

One of the best places to train outside of Thailand is at Evolve MMA in Singapore.

Evolve MMA has many former Lumpinee and Rajademnere Champions as well as former top trainers from gyms such as Sityodtong on available to train with.

It really is a great place to train muay thai as well as other martial arts such as MMA and BJJ with many excellent trainers and current fighters on their roster.

Action Plan

  1. Google ‘muay thai near me’ and see what is available in your area. Read reviews and check class times and costs to see if the gym is a good fit for you.
  2. If there are no options near you, check out what is available online. The advantage with online training is you can start right away. You can also learn for free from YouTube and other online muay thai learning sites.
  3. Also consider DVDs and books so you can watch and read them without the need for internet connections. This will require funds to purchase them.
  4. If you are keen on live training and learn better in person then look for other martial arts in your area. Judo and Boxing are usually available worldwide and are great places to start and add in your own muay thai training online or from books/DVDs.
  5. Eventually try to save some money and plan some time to travel to Thailand at least once. Or travel to regions and countries that have muay thai available such as Evolve MMA in Singapore.
