How long is a round in boxing? That depends on the style of boxing you are talking about. There are different styles of boxing i.e Pro vs amateur and Western vs Thai boxing, bareknuckle or gloved.

Each have different lengths and number of rounds. But each of these ‘boxing’ styles are typically fought in a standard boxing ring.

Professional boxing is the arena of well known names such as Ali, Tyson, Mayweather and Pacquiao.

The rounds and length of rounds are a standard 12 Rounds with 3 minutes of length for each round.

There is a standard 1 minute rest between each round of professional boxing.

How long is an amateur boxing round?

  • Rounds : up to 3 for Male and up to 4 Rounds for female
  • Round length : 3 minutes for Male and 2 minutes for female
  • Rest between rounds : 1 minute

Amateur boxing is the style fought at events such as the Olympics or Commenwealth Games.

National amateur boxing associations across the globe also utilize these standards for rounds and round length.

There are different set rounds for women and women.

Amateur boxing rounds for men three minutes in length with up to 3 rounds per match.

For women the round length is 2 minutes with up to four rounds permitted in female amateur boxing matches.

Thai boxing or muay thai in Thai language is the national sport of Thailand and is hugely popular in the world today.

Well known Thai boxers in the world today include Buakaw, Saenchai, Yodsanklai and Rodtang.

This style of fighting can be more exhausting than Western style boxing with many more ways to damage and KO your opponent.

Rounds are 3 minutes in length with 2 minutes rest between rounds and 5 Rounds total as a standard in muay thai.

So if a muay thai fight goes the distance it will last for 25 minutes.

Amateur muay thai fights can be either 3 or 5 Round fights of 3 minute round length with a one minute rest.

Burmese boxing or Lethwei is a professional sport and martial art of Myanmar.

It is one of the most brutal combat sports in the world today the includes headbutts in addition to striking with the hands, knees, legs and elbows.

Each bout can be booked as a 3, 4 or 5 round fight with 3 minutes per round and a 2-minute break in between rounds. Championship bouts are 5 round fights with 3 minutes per round and a 2-minute break between rounds.

Kickboxing is a relatively new style that arose in great part to the Muay thai VS Karate – Japan VS Thailand matches that took place in the 1960s where muay thai emerged dominant.

By infusing aspects of muay thai and Karate kickboxing was developed and has heavily influenced Dutch style kickboxing.

Kickboxing matches probably have the most variation in round length and number of rounds across different associations and styles.

But 5 Rounds of 3 minutes each is pretty much an industry standard but can be less for amateur kickboxing matches.
