Learn Martial Arts Online Free at Home – 7 Step Guide

If you want to learn martial arts online free at home then you this step by step guide will help you do just that.

There are a tonne of free resources available to learn martial arts.

However to begin learning a martial art you would need a strucutred curriculum or guide that builds on the foundation techniques to more advanced techniques and combinations.

Well that is where this guide can help you.

Follow these 7 steps and you can get started and learn martial arts online for free at home.

1. Choose Your Style

When it comes to learning martial arts at home I personally favor striking arts.

This is because you can make great progress with a heavy bag. But for more grappling focussed martial arts – partner work is a must.

There are definitely solo drills for grappling arts, but as a beginner, striking arts and having something to strike allows you to make more progress alone.

And you definitely need partner work, pad work and sparring outside of solo training for striking as well. But you can generally make more progress alone with striking over grappling based martial arts.

I have a post about the 6 Best Martial Arts to Learn at Home HERE

But if you want to learn BJJ, Judo or even MMA ( we discuss MMA below) which require grappling, don’t let that stop you from getting started training at home.

2. Find Quality Free Online Learning Resources

This will take quite a bit of researching and reading reviews and testimonials.

As well as watching a lot of videos by different instructors to see which style you like and which instructor you want to learn from.

But learning martial arts at home for free you also have the option to learn from different instructors and masters who put their stuff online for free.

But to learn martial arts for free at home one of your best resources is YouTube.

There are a tonne of quality resources for learning just about every martial art. Though as stated you will need to research through and see which ones you like and that fit your style.

Below are just some examples of excellent online free learning resources for different martial arts.

3. Set Up Your Training Space

Ok so now you know what martial art and you have some learning resources the net step is your training area and some gear.

You dont really need much space.

Enough to shadow box or perform kata, stretching and warm up exercises such as foam rolling.

One of the simplest home gyms that I see a lot is a heavy bag hanging from a tree outside.

It could also be your garage or spare room but you need some space to move around and train.

MAts would be a great option to have, it is more hygienic and gentler if you fall.

Both mats and a heavy bag can be made yourself at home to keep costs very low.

4. Make a Training Schedule and Stick with It

Three times a week is probably the minimum to keep improving. That is quality training which can be achieved solo at home.

Twice a week can help maintain the technique, body control and knowledge you currently have.

2-3 times a week for 1-3 months is a great starting point and goal to aim for.

It is also quite achievable especially since you wont have to travel to train and can do it at home.

5. Make Your Workouts

Without somesort of structure most likley you will flounder around and not achieve much.

Especially training solo at home.

So you need some sort of structure for each workout.

This is where a paid program can come in handy. But there are also free resources for struutred learning.

Either way you need a plan to follow or your results could suffer.

To find a great training and workout plan for free is not easy.

But one excellent example is Joseph Valtellinis kickboxing tutorials that build form the foundation up – all for free.

6. Join an Online Community

There are many online communities you can join for free with like minded martial artisits of your same style.

These can be valuable places to learn from more epereinced practitioners for free and safely online.

Here you can also ask for reviews on paid programs if you want to purchase online learning resources in the future.

Sharing your training can also be a great way to stay motivated and to get some constructive freedback,

Be preapred to receive crtiticism though and some prople online are quire harsh.

7. Plan to Spend a Little Money in the Future

This will only enhance your learning experience and passion for martial arts.

Whether it be travel to attend a live seminar, or paying for an online product or subscription – online learning resources cost money becasue they take time and effort as well as experience to produce high quality work.

Traveling out of town or to another country in the future could be one option if you plan and budget for it. This way you can learn from great teachers and further your knowledge even more.

Learn Martial Arts Online Free at Home – Final Thoughts

The main aim of this post is to encourage anyone who is interested in martial arts to get started at home for free.

There are many reasons why it can be difficult to attend classes whether it be:

  • location
  • cost
  • apprehension

In these cases it is perfectly fine to start training martial arts at home using free resources online.

This is the path I took with muay thai BJJ for the past few years and I am forever grateful that despite a lot of factors I was able to get started and I am a better person for it.
